Naruto wears the First Hokage necklace around his neck. What is this necklace and how did it get to him? We’ll tell you more about it below.
What is the First Hokage’s Necklace?
The First Hokage Necklace is a special necklace of Hashirama Senju, the First Hokage, with which he could control Biju and their Jinchuuriki. It also allowed him to improve his technique. As mentioned, the necklace is created from a special crystal, so it costs a huge amount of money – if you sell it, you can buy three mountains with the proceeds.
The first Hokage gave the necklace to his granddaughter Tsunade, who in turn gave it to his younger brother Navaki for his birthday. However, the next day he was killed by falling into an explosive trap. Orochimaru, who witnessed these events, removed the necklace from his body and gave it to Tsunade before identifying him. Tsunade then gave it to her lover Dan, but he too was soon killed in the war. Because of this, there was a popular belief that the necklace was cursed, so only Tsunade could wear it safely.
How Did the Necklace Get to Naruto?
One day Tsunade and Naruto bet on this necklace whether he could learn the Rasengan technique in a week, Naruto wins the bet, so the necklace goes to him, but it doesn’t make him die (in the 95 episode of the anime or 168 chapter of the manga). Several times it proved quite useful, as Yamato, who possesses the First Hokage’s DNA and the Tree Element, was able to use it to suppress Kubi’s power if it got out of hand. During the battle with Pein, Naruto, becoming enraged after the supposed death of Hinata who tried to help him in the battle, unleashes the Fox’s chakra cover again. When he has a sixth tail, the necklace tries to contain Kyubey’s chakra, but Naruto destroys it. According to Yamato, without the necklace he is no longer able to suppress the Nine-Tails chakra, though he tries to do so at the Falls of Truth.
