After World War II, Shinobi Jiraiya began training the Rain Orphans. While this was partly to help them take care of themselves, it was also necessary to teach Nagato how to use the Rinnegan. Since Jiraiya wished for peace, he hoped that Nagato, who had the same eyes as the Sage of the Six Ways, could unite the world as the Sage did. When Jiraiya left them, Nagato and the other orphans also embraced this desire and used their teenage years preaching about ending the war. Hanzo, the leader of the Hidden Rain, saw this as a threat to his rule and kidnapped Konan. He then forced Nagato to make a choice: kill Yahiko or sacrifice Konan. In order to avoid Nagato having to choose, Yahiko killed himself and entrusted Nagato with their dreams of a peaceful future. After losing his friend, Nagato has come to the conclusion that diplomacy is useless on the road to peace.
