In the period leading up to the creation of the ninja villages, the Uchiha clan was in constant rivalry with the Senju clan, becoming known throughout the world. Remembering Itachi’s words, Sasuke asks if power and fame were the reasons for Madara to take his younger brother’s eyes. Tobi answers in the affirmative, but only with the assumption that his brother gave up his eyes voluntarily to secure the clan’s future. For this reason Madara was unwilling to accept the subsequent offer of peace, but was forced to accept it at the request of the clan members. Thus the Village of the Hidden Leaf was founded, and the title of Hokage was delegated to Hashirama Senju, not Madara. Fearing that Senju would ruin the Uchiha, Madara attempted to take control of the Leaf. He failed, and was thought to be dead, but the Uchiha were subsequently treated with suspicion in the Hidden Leaf. When the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox attacked the Leaf sixteen years ago, the village became suspicious of the Uchiha clan’s involvement. Tired of mistrust, the Uchiha began to plot against the Leaf, a precursor to Itachi’s tragedy.
