Despite the pain of serious injuries, Jiraiya was able to capture one of the Six Way Paines. He tried to figure out why none of the Paines were similar to Nagato, but confirmed that one of them was similar to Yahiko and all the others had a Rinnegan. He thought that Yahiko had taken a Rinnegan from Nagato, but soon dismissed that theory, since all six Paynes had a Rinnegan. In addition, Jiraiya remembered a conversation he had with Nagato a long time ago. When the head protector of the Payne in front of him slid off his forehead, Jiraiya saw the scar on it and recognized it as a ninja he had encountered in the past. Knowing for certain that it wasn’t Nagato, Jiraiya decided to test his assumption instead of returning to the Leaf. He asked the Two Great Toad Sages to return home, but they refused at first, nevertheless he managed to convince Sheema to take the captured Paine back to the Hidden Leaf for study. Jiraiya and Fukasaku left the barrier and went to meet the remaining Paines. Closely observing them all, Jiraiya became convinced that he had met each of them before. He managed to uncover the Payne’s secret, but he was immediately surrounded and his throat was crushed.
