The Joonins catch up with the strangers and try to figure out who they are and why they came to the village. A glance at the stranger is enough to identify him as Itachi Uchiha, a renegade ninja and Sasuke’s older brother. His partner is Kisame Hoshigaki, a swordsman from the village of Hidden Mist. All four engage in combat. Asuma blocks Kisame’s sword attack with his knuckleblades, and Kurenai uses genjutsu behind his back. Kisama manages to overpower Asuma and cleave his shoulder. Finally Kurenai’s genjutsu kicks in, but Itachi quickly manages to turn it against herself. Kurenai removes the effects of the genjutsu just enough to avoid the fatal blow. Meanwhile, Asume manages to dodge Kisame’s attacks and even slashes his face, much to the swordsman’s consternation. Itachi and Kisame quickly build up their advantage, and when they should have killed Kurenai and Asuma, Kakashi appears and prevents them from doing so.
