Gaara gets behind Rock Lee and starts to attack. Lee doesn’t dodge a single blow, and the audience can’t understand why. Kakashi explains that Lee is in a lot of pain after using the Lotus, as the technique puts too much strain on his entire body. Maito Gai looks on with sorrow at the beating of his apprentice. He recalls how hard Lee trained. He really wanted to become a ninja, even though the other children ridiculed him for not being able to use ninjutsu and genjutsu. He diligently honed his taijutsu and managed to become a genin. At Gai’s meeting with his team, Lee stated his desire to prove that it was possible to become a great shinobi using only taijutsu. Maito Gai watched his mentee train hard and recognized him as a “Genius of Hard Work.” Remembering this, Gai smiles. Lee notices this, and, perked up, he’s ready to fight on.
