Despite his claims to be a talented shinobi who will someday become a Hokage, Naruto is unable to correctly perform a single jutsu, even the simplest one such as the Cloning Technique. After a failed attempt to graduate from the ninja academy, one of his instructors, Mizuki, tells him that if he can steal the Seal Scroll and learn one of the techniques it describes, he will be allowed to join the ranks of shinobi. After successfully stealing the scroll, Naruto is caught by his other instructor, Iruka Umino. Astonished that Iruka was able to find him so quickly, Naruto begins to worry that now he won’t be able to pass the ninja academy exam. Realizing that Naruto has been tricked, Iruka tries to protect him from Mizuki, while Mizuki plans to take the forbidden scroll for himself.
Mizuki tells Naruto that he has become lonely because of the Nine-Tailed Fox, which is sealed in Naruto, a fact the villagers previously concealed from him. He explains to him that the villagers of Konoha hate him because of this beast inside him, and Iruka, whose parents were killed by the Nine-Tailed Fox, probably hates him more than the others. However, Iruka says this is not the case as he does not blame Naruto for what the beast has done, in fact, he actually sympathizes with Naruto as he also grew up without a family. Naruto decides to help Iruka and uses the Multiple Shadow Cloning technique he just learned to defeat Mizuki. Amazed by the difficulty of the technique Naruto has learned, Iruka officially declares Naruto a Konoha ninja.
